What is medical imaging?
Medical imaging services such as X-rays and ultrasounds allow the team at Faith Medical Center to examine the inside of your body and diagnose conditions ranging from pregnancy to bone fractures without having to make an incision. Medical imaging services are noninvasive and safe.
What are X-rays?
An X-ray is a diagnostic imaging study that uses a small and safe amount of radiation to create images of your bones. Your provider uses an X-ray machine to send the radiation through your body. Your bones, organs, and tissues absorb the radiation at different rates, and as the remaining radiation passes through your body, the X-ray equipment detects the different amounts of radiation which create images of your bones.
What are ultrasounds?
Ultrasounds are another type of diagnostic imaging test. The test uses high-frequency sound waves which bounce off of your internal organs at different speeds to create images of your insides. Ultrasounds are safe, noninvasive, and completely painless.
Why would I need X-rays or an ultrasound?
X-rays and ultrasounds allow the team at Faith Medical Center to see your bones and internal organs without having to make an incision in your body. Some of the common reasons you might need to have an X-ray or ultrasound include: • Broken bones
• Pneumonia
• Certain cancers
• Osteoporosis
• Arthritis
• Digestive problems
• Tissue injuries
• Reproductive health problems such as uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts
• Pregnancy
• Circulatory problems
Your provider at Faith Medical Center will let you know which diagnostic medical imaging tests are needed.
What happens during an X-ray or ultrasound?
X-rays and ultrasounds are both noninvasive, painless procedures. X-rays During an X-ray, you rest between the two parts of the X-ray machine. Your provider may give you a lead apron to protect the parts of your body that aren’t being X-rayed, or they may inject you with a contrast dye to improve the quality of the images. You need to stay completely still during your X-ray, and your provider may give you a block or brace to help. Fortunately, X-rays only take a couple of seconds, so you don’t need to stay still for long. Ultrasound When you have an ultrasound, you either change into a hospital gown or adjust your clothing to reveal the part of your body that needs examination. Your provider applies a gel to your skin which helps the sound waves move through your body. Then, they glide a handheld transducer wand over your skin. The transducer sends the sound waves through your body and collects them as they bounce back off of your internal organs. The transducer sends the information to a computer that generates images of the inside of your body. Your provider examines the images on a monitor in the treatment room looking for signs of disease or injury.
